Commercial Manager

  • Working closely with Managing Directors, Accounts Manager and cross discipline team members to promote and encourage a good and safe working environment. 
  • Acting as a member of the Companys upper management, along with the Company Directors and Accounts Manager.
  • Directing the Companys Commercial Departments operations and administration.
  • Overseeing the Companys commercial procedures by directing Project Co-Ordinators and liaising closely with Project Managers, Site Managers, and all other relevant staff to ensure efficient and high quality delivery of projects.
  • Ensuring that communication is clear and effective in order to carry out the works safely and efficiently.
  • Working with Project Managers and the Accounts Manager on project costings towards achieving reliable and profitable income for the company, as well as using this information to prepare forecasts.
  • Leading the valuations and variations pricing process, and determining invoice totals by communicating with the Accounts Manager and Project Managers.
  • Reviewing and approving Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS).
  • Working with the Company Directors and external advisors to develop and implement the Companys Health and Safety, Corporate Responsibility, Environmental, Equal Opportunities, and Anti-Fraud & Bribery policies.
  • Working with the Quality Management Team to develop and implement the Companys quality policy.
  • Attending project progress meetings, or sending Project Co-ordinators as delegates. Ensuring that minutes from these meetings are distributed amongst relevant staff and filed.
  • Pricing and negotiating contracts for projects at tender.
  • Updating the website in conjunction with external web support.
  • Working closely with Project Managers to produce programmes and informing the Accounts Manager of the status of projects for forecasting and cash flow management purposes.
  • Communicating positively with the clients representatives in order to ensure a quality service is provided that meets the clients expectations
  • Processing data from Site Engineers or Project Managers to produce valuations that are submitted to client; leading disputation process for the Company for any queried invoices.
  • Processing data from Site Engineers or Project Managers to check subcontractors valuations; leading disputation process for the Company for any queried invoices; sanctioning Accounts Manager to make payments to subcontractors.
  • Overseeing and double-checking the surveys made by Site Engineers and Project Managers.
  • Examining changes in the scheme since tender to establish potential variations; instructing Site Engineers and Project Managers to inform about material changes on site; working with Project Co-Ordinators to document evidence and scale of variations and submitting these to client for approval; adding variation costs to valuations.
  • Acting as the Companys lead purchaser, and so issuing purchase orders and instructing others to use them.
  • Directing the process for acquiring quotes and specification data from suppliers, and getting this approved by the client before facilitating communications between material suppliers, the Accounts Manager, Project Managers, and Project Co-Ordinators over payment, delivery, and installation logistics.
  • Procurement (Subcontractors Contractor Competency Questionnaire) instructing the Office Manager to process CCQ with subcontractor; ensuring that CCQ is complete before appointing subcontractor.
  • Performing an evaluation of subcontractors performance once their works are complete; accumulating information from this evaluation to better inform decisions about appointing subcontractors and managing subcontracted works in future.
  • Signing off supplier invoices on a monthly basis, and explaining to the Accounts Manager and Office Manager the basis for any unsigned invoices so that they can query or dispute the invoice with the supplier
  • Ensuring that PQQs are accurately completed; delegating responsibility for completing the PQQ to a Project Co-Ordinator.
  • Attending meetings and liaising generally with clients and other relevant parties to negotiate the terms of contracts before works on site commence.
  • Compiling and submitting quotations to clients by their specified return deadline, or otherwise informing the client that we will not be tendering with a pro forma email.
  • Instructing site engineers and Document Controller to take measurements and collating these for use in valuations, variations, and quotations
  • Liaising with the Accounts Manager, Document Controller and the Quality Management team to ensure that the process is properly sustained; responding to data requests from the Document Controller
  • Using feedback to inform discussions with the upper management team in how to best implement changes that will improve processes; ensuring that quality improvements are driven by the upper management team with a constant focus on customer satisfaction based on the feedback received from customers and clients
  • Writing up new projects to be added to the websites portfolio and communicating these to a third-party website programmer for upload; instructing and approving any amendments to the website
  • Leading the process of conducting appraisals of staff with the Accounts Manager and reporting back to Managing Directors.
  • Determining the wage cap for site operative skill levels with the upper management team, and having the sign off on all level increases and decreases.
  • Signing off on all staff holiday requests, ensuring that staffing levels do not drop to an unsustainable level.
  • Signing off on staff expense forms.

  • Having the final say on hiring of site operatives and pay rises; meeting with upper management team to decide upon hiring of new office staff and Project Managers.
  • Following the grievance process as stipulated in the staff handbook as a senior member of management.
  • Liaising with the Office Manager and Project Managers over disciplinary issues with site operatives; following the disciplinary procedures in the staff handbook as a senior member of management (e.g. issuing formal verbal warnings, meetings).
  • Training and Qualifications- in conjunction with upper management,  deciding upon which operatives and staff require training, and determining which qualifications are required; liaising with Project Managers to determine H&S qualification requirements.
  • Using feedback to inform discussions with upper management team in how to best implement changes that will improve processes; ensuring that quality improvements are driven by the upper management team with a constant focus on customer satisfaction/employee satisfaction based on the feedback received from customers, clients and Company workforce.
  • Continually promoting and encouraging a thriving work environment to safeguard the welfare of all staff and operatives to actively sustain a strong oranisational work ethic.
