Our client seeks a Landscape Team Senior Manager. This role is pivotal within the project team. Liaising between the Design, Edible Playgrounds and Landscape build teams, as well as end users.

The successful candidate will mainly undertake project management, planning and build of the Playground programme in London and UK wide from time to time.

You will be required to work on a range of other landscaping projects from time to time. You will need to be an experienced, creative, skilled and confident construction professional, who is able to switch between hands-on site, to managing budgets and programmes and interpreting detailed drawings and specifications.

Central to the role is the requirement for a manager who fully understands Health and Safety, contractual and legal obligations as they will be responsible for ensuring projects are delivered to the highest and safest standards. You will report to the Projects Director and liaise closely with the Design team.

Responsibilities

  • Confident communicator, supporting the Projects Director by feeding into future strategic, operational and tactical planning to meet the changing operational needs of the organisation.
  • A self-starter, able to organise the landscape team programme and staff resources, maintain accurate and up to date records to meet budget and programme constraints, and will be supported in this by the landscape projects coordinator.
  • Able to support the Design Director in establishing a strategic approach to construction quality, efficiencies and operations, based on experiences gained in current and previous programmes.
  • Strive to deliver multiple projects and bespoke designs as efficiently as possible by reviewing and refining approaches with the design team.
  • Excellent organisational and people-management skills required, you will continually review and improve construction processes, embedding first rate systems within the team. Management of 3 Landscape Team Leaders who each manage delivery teams of between 3 and 4 people. In addition, the LTM will manage a Landscape Projects Coordinator who will support operational activities in the team.
  • You will undertake regular line management meetings (minimum monthly) and bi-annual appraisals, embedding the Project Teams line management ethos to ensure reports are supported and continue to develop in their role. This includes ensuring ad-hoc workers, volunteers and/or trainees are managed effectively by team leaders and afforded a high level of care with access to HR support.  
  • Responsible for their team facilities, vehicles, tools and equipment, both static and mobile and will liaise closely with the Urban Forest and Operations Manager, Facilities Manager and the Project Director to ensure all are maintained and used safely and to correct guidance.
  • You will be responsible for identifying where specific training is required and provided for use of machinery, kit or other specialist activity.
  • Liaising with the Design Team to provide cost estimates, monitoring, recording expenditure against agreed budgets and maintaining accurate and up to date records of expenditure against forecast.
  • Ensuring projects are as cost-effective as possible without compromising quality, using strong relationships with suppliers and sustainable sources.
  • You will manage, develop and implement the Health and Safety Management Plan and risk assessments for edible playgrounds and other landscape projects to ensure construction activities are delivered safely in line with the plan.
  • Enuring H&S policies, procedures, risk assessments, method statements, COSHH, and safe working practices are used and maintained in line with current legislation and followed through to operations in the yard and on site.

Specification

  • Demonstrable experience (5-10 years +) in and technical knowledge of construction, design & build, interpretation of contracts, plans, detailed drawings and specifications ESSENTIAL
  • Nationally recognised qualification and / or extensive 5-10+ years experience in carpentry / woodworking ESSENTIAL
  • General landscape hard works construction experience including carpentry, installation of paving using a range of standard materials, creation of precise levels, drainage, brick / block work etc ESSENTIAL
  • Experience in a range of soft works implementation  installation of soils, aggregates, trees, shrubs, grass and other vegetation with associated accessories from time to time DESIRABLE
  • Strong project management skills, including cost estimates, budgeting, managing orders, financial record keeping ESSENTIAL
  • Experience of delivery of multiple and overlapping projects to tight programmes ESSENTIAL
  • Experience of coordinating and leading outdoor workshops and events with schools, community or volunteer groups, including construction, planting and maintenance DESIRABLE
  • Nationally recognised qualification and training in Health & Safety legislation, regulations and guidance and using risk assessment in practice eg. IOSH and or NEBOSH and other DESIRABLE
  • Valid, clean driving licence with towing entitlement (optional), experience of driving crew vans and towing trailers ESSENTIAL
  • IT literate on standard Microsoft, Word, Excel, G Mail etc and willing to develop skills as technology develops ESSENTIAL
  • Experience of working in a commercial tendering environment DESIRABLE
  • Knowledge of trees, horticulture and resources involved DESIRABLE
  • Outdoor event management experience DESIRABLE
  • An understanding of working with vulnerable groups DESIRABLE
  • Experience of working with and managing volunteers DESIRABLE
